Can Dermaplaning Cause Breakouts? Myth vs. Reality
Dermaplaning is a favorite treatment at Evolve Med Spa for achieving instant smoothness and radiance. By gently exfoliating the skin and removing fine vellus hair (peach fuzz), it leaves the face feeling incredibly soft and creates the perfect canvas for makeup and skincare products.
It's a valid concern! While dermaplaning itself does not cause acne, it can definitely trigger a flare-up if done incorrectly or if you have specific underlying skin conditions. Understanding the difference between a true breakout and a temporary "purge" is key.
The Short Answer: Dermaplaning Does Not Cause Acne
Dermaplaning is a form of physical exfoliation that uses a sterile, surgical-grade scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to gently scrape off the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair.
The mechanism of dermaplaning does not introduce bacteria or trigger the hormonal shifts that cause acne. In fact, by removing the superficial layer of dead skin cells and debris, it actually helps to prevent future clogged pores.
So, if dermaplaning is not the cause, why do some people experience acne after dermaplaning? The answer usually falls into one of three categories:
1. The Active Acne Trap
The most common reason for a breakout is performing the procedure on skin that already has active acne lesions, cystic acne, or open wounds. Dermaplaning should never be performed over active pustules or cysts.
The Risk: The blade can drag bacteria from the active lesion across the rest of the face, leading to widespread infection and a significant breakout.
Our Protocol: At Evolve Med Spa, we will always postpone or modify your treatment if active lesions are present to avoid spreading bacteria.
2. The Purge Phenomenon
For some individuals, particularly those with congested skin who are new to strong exfoliation treatments, dermaplaning can trigger a purging process.
The Reason: By aggressively removing the dead surface layer, the treatment accelerates the skin's cell turnover cycle. This brings trapped oil, sebum, and micro-comedones (tiny, underlying blockages) to the surface faster than they normally would.
The Experience: This can look like a temporary increase in whiteheads or small pimples for a few days post-treatment. While frustrating, this is often a sign that the treatment is working to clear congestion.
3. Aftercare & Contamination
The skin is highly vulnerable immediately following a deep exfoliation. If you experience new acne after dermaplaning, it is often due to product contamination or irritation:
Touching the Face: Using unclean hands to touch the freshly exposed skin.
Harsh Products: Applying heavy, active ingredients (like Retinol or strong acids) too soon.
Unclean Materials: Using dirty makeup brushes, phone screens, or pillowcases immediately post-treatment.
How to Lessen the Likeliness of a Breakout
The power to prevent dermaplaning breakouts is mostly in your hands (and your provider's). Here are our top tips:
Pre-Treatment:
Clear the Area: Ensure your skin is completely clear of active acne or open sores 48 hours prior to your visit.
Stop Actives: Pause prescription retinoids and strong exfoliating acids 3-5 days before your appointment.
Post-Treatment Aftercare (The First 48 Hours):
Strict SPF: Apply a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen every morning. Freshly exfoliated skin is extremely sensitive to UV damage, which causes inflammation and can worsen potential breakouts.
Keep it Simple: Use only gentle, nourishing, and hydrating products (think Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide-rich moisturizers). Avoid all makeup, fragrance, active serums, and harsh cleansers for the first 24 hours.
Stay Clean: Use a clean pillowcase and a clean, fresh towel for drying your face. Sanitize your phone screen to minimize bacterial transfer.
No Sweat: Avoid excessive heat, saunas, hot tubs, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours, as sweat and excess heat can irritate the open pores.
Your safety and skin health are always our top priority. If you have any concerns about your skin's tendency to break out, our Evolve Med Spa professionals will tailor your pre- and post-care routine to ensure you achieve a flawless finish every time.
